Sunlight, salt water, solitude: the Mal Paso Residence in the Californian coastal strip of Big Sur has it all in abundance. Literally built into the barren landscape, the house becomes part of its surroundings. Stone walls alternate with floor-to-ceiling windows. But the best thing is the view of the wild Pacific Ocean, which we couldn’t tear ourselves away from for days.

Sometimes you just need space, peace and quiet and the feeling of being the only person on earth. A happy, probably introverted family has not only fulfilled exactly this dream with this home, but is also making a contribution to climate protection. Thanks to solar panels and Tesla Powerwalls, the Mal Paso Residence is climate-neutral. With endless views of the Pacific or the empty space around the house, you can clear your head with a clear conscience. Four connected pavilions offer retreats and communal areas. And thanks to a clever layout that blends into the landscape, they hardly disturb the surroundings. Protected from the strong Pacific wind, you feel safe and secure in the warm, light-flooded interior, while outside you become one with nature.

Just as remote, but a little colder: Ontario is home to another secluded dream house.
