In winter, a good sweater is often the whole outfit. On the fall/winter 2026/27 runways, knitwear took centre stage: with extra-high necks, broad shoulders, deep V-necks or as a dress. Here are the seven knitwear trends of the season – and how to wear them.
Last updated: October 2026
1. The Extra-High Turtleneck

The turtleneck is growing: Gabriela Hearst and Icicle showed sweaters with particularly high, loosely falling necks that almost replace a scarf.
How to wear it: Under your coat instead of a scarf – or on its own with wide trousers.
2. Broad Shoulders, Boxy Shape

Knitwear gets structure. Tory Burch showed boxy sweaters with defined shoulders over shirts, Carolina Herrera went for balloon silhouettes.
How to wear it: With a slim skirt or slim trousers to keep the proportions right.
3. Chunky Cardigans

Thick, chunky cardigans – sometimes with a flared collar, sometimes straight-cut – became an elegant alternative to a jacket. Seen at Magda Butrym, Altuzarra and Kseniaschnaider. Chanel, Prada and Miu Miu even turned the cardigan into an evening piece.
How to wear it: Buttoned up like a sweater or open over a silk top – with a skirt and boots.
4. Deep V-Necks

The V-neck is getting deeper and invites layering. Zimmermann, Nina Ricci, Prada and Missoni showed sweaters with a pronounced deep V. Zimmermann went for cream cricket sweaters with contrast stripes along the neckline.
How to wear it: Over a collared blouse or a fine turtleneck – or on its own with a necklace.
5. Argyle & Patterns

The diamond pattern is back, bringing a hint of preppy. Khaite showed chunky argyle sweaters with long gloves, Zankov combined argyle with argyle. For more colour, look to the maximalist knits at Dries Van Noten, Nina Ricci and Lacoste. Stella McCartney showed colourful crochet patchwork.
How to wear it: A patterned sweater needs calm companions: plain trousers or a skirt in one colour from the pattern.
6. Knitted Vests

The vest is here to stay: Stella McCartney showed colourful crochet vests, Uma Wang minimalist cashmere versions. They work over a shirt or on their own. Dries Van Noten showed them in the men’s collection, colourful and with diamond patterns.
How to wear it: Over a white shirt with wide trousers – or on bare skin with a blazer on top.
7. The Knit Dress

The most comfortable dress of the winter: Proenza Schouler showed long, slightly relaxed knit dresses, Isabel Marant short knitted mini dresses. Max Mara sent a floor-length knit dress with a keyhole back down the runway, Salinas a colourful striped mini dress with ruffles and Ganni a short knit dress with puff sleeves.
How to wear it: With over-the-knee or slouchy boots – that’s all you need. Add a coat and your winter look is done.
