Men’s Coat Trends Fall/Winter 2026/27: The Most Important Coats for Men

In menswear, too, the coat is this winter’s most important piece. At the men’s shows in Milan and Paris and at Burberry in London, coats were cut slimmer, made in leather, combined with capes and shown in colours like red and burgundy. Here are the men’s coat trends for fall/winter 2026/27 – and how to wear them.

Last updated: October 2026

1. The Cape Effect

The cape is conquering menswear. Prada layered utility capes over slim coats, Dior showed capes in jacquard and velvet, and Dries Van Noten sent out trench coats with wide storm flaps that read like short capes. Rick Owens stitched small cloak panels directly onto coats and puffers.

How to wear it: With slim trousers and sturdy shoes so the volume stays on top. A coat with a cape detail doesn’t need a scarf.

2. Leather from Head to Toe

At Hermès, calfskin dominated the men’s collection – from glossy coats to leather-trimmed scarves. The leather coat came long and matte black, but also glossy in dark blue. Burberry also sent men down the runway in long leather coats. That makes the leather coat the investment piece of the season.

How to wear it: With knitwear and wool trousers – not leather trousers. The coat should be the only leather piece in the outfit.

3. Fur Collars and Shearling

Generous collars are not just for women. Burberry combined checked wool coats with fur collars and leather lapels, and Hermès showed a coat made entirely of cream shearling. If you prefer to avoid real fur, there are high-quality faux-fur options today.

How to wear it: Wear the coat closed so the collar shows its volume. Add a turtleneck in a muted colour.

4. The Trench Coat with a Utility Twist

The trench coat remains the classic – but becomes more functional. Utility trench coats returned to the runways; Burberry showed a navy trench with a wrap shape, Dries Van Noten one with wide storm flaps. Checked trench coats complete the picture, also at Burberry.

How to wear it: Open over a suit or knitwear in autumn, with a scarf and leather gloves in winter.

5. Cut Slimmer

After years of oversize, the men’s silhouette is getting leaner again. Prada showed slim-cut suits and coats, Raf Simons softer shoulders and clean lines. This fits the trend towards classic, partly double-breasted suits.

How to wear it: Over a suit: the coat should fully cover the jacket length and sit on the shoulders – not hang.

6. Colour: Red and Burgundy

Dare to wear colour: Louis Vuitton sent coats in burgundy and rust red down the runway and, like Hermès and Prada, used pink in coats and knitwear. Burberry showed burgundy checks. If you prefer the classics, stick with navy, camel and grey.

How to wear it: A coloured coat is the statement – keep everything underneath grey, navy or black.
