Not every day calls for a long coat. For transitional weather and as a layering piece in winter, the jacket is unbeatable – and on the fall/winter 2026/27 runways it reinvented itself: strictly military at Khaite, cropped at Dior, trimmed with fur at Ralph Lauren. Here are the six jacket trends of the season.
Last updated: October 2026
1. Military Jackets: Sharp Lines, Gold Details

The military jacket is back – with sharp shoulders, toggle closures and cord details. Khaite showed leather and wool versions with rope-like fastenings across the chest, while Ann Demeulemeester paired military rigour with fringed scarves and cotton shirts. Gold trims and piping like on a uniform jacket are typical.
How to wear it: As a contrast to something soft: a flowing skirt, a silk scarf or wide trousers.
2. Cropped Jackets: Short Is the New Long

Short, high-cut jackets are the counterpoint to the season’s XXL coats. Altuzarra showed a cropped suede jacket, Dior a version in textured fabric, Proenza Schouler one in soft wool. Ann Demeulemeester combined a short velvet jacket with a generous shearling collar.
How to wear it: With high-waisted trousers or skirts – that way the short length looks intentional and lengthens your legs.
3. The Black Leather Jacket, Rethought

A classic with an update: Valentino showed the black leather jacket with a plunging V-neck, Isabel Marant quilted it, Khaite added hand-embroidered military cording. And Hermès made leather the common thread of its entire collection – belted, in mustard, burgundy and black. In the Hermès menswear collection, the simple black leather blouson was a staple too.
How to wear it: Over a knit dress or with a turtleneck and pleated trousers – this season leather looks elegant rather than rock’n’roll.
4. Jackets with Fur Collars

Fur collars are not just for coats. Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney and Ulla Johnson added black and brown fur trims to short jackets. Isabel Marant combined a black leather jacket with a fur collar, Ralph Lauren put shearling on brown leather – and, for men, fur on a silver down jacket. Stella McCartney’s fur is traditionally animal-free – and faux fur has never looked better.
How to wear it: The collar is the eye-catcher – pair it with simple basics in the same colour family.
5. Collarless Jackets & Cardigan Jackets

Without lapels, a jacket instantly looks more ladylike. Chanel of course showed tweed with gold buttons, Balmain a tiger-print version, Kallmeyer one in shimmering gold. Dior showed a textured knit jacket with a peplum. Chanel, Prada and Miu Miu also made the relaxed knitted jacket the piece to wear – with knee-length skirts and elegant shoes.
How to wear it: Like a blazer: over a blouse or fine knit, with a skirt and ballet flats or slim boots.
6. Car Coats & Peplum: The New Lengths

Between jacket and coat sits the car coat: hip- to thigh-length and perfect for transitional weather. Kallmeyer and Miu Miu showed it. For a more feminine look, choose a fitted peplum jacket with a flared hem, as seen at Dior and Givenchy – at Givenchy in houndstooth.
How to wear it: The car coat with jeans and loafers, the peplum jacket with slim trousers – it is all about the defined waist.
