The Faces: Our heroes and heroines of the month

The Faces: Our heroes and heroines of the month

What do an acting bodybuilder, an influencer with her own print magazine and a comedian who tries to explain the world of the rich to mere mortals have in common? They have all earned themselves a place on our list of heroes and heroines.

Lara Violetta

Princess

The paper costs may be somewhat higher. But we speak from experience: glossy magazines are the most beautiful form of content creation. Lara Violetta has also launched her own print product with the Violet Papers – and designed a bag to present the issues perfectly. So far, the German-born designer has set trends on social media with her make-up aesthetic and turned the heads of the fashion scene in her adopted home of Paris. We welcome the publisher to the business. Out for a coffee on the Rue de Belleville?

Walton Goggins

Sun god

Walton Goggins’ future is so bright that he has launched his own sunglasses collection with Google Glass. They may look like you’re shouting at children on the ski slopes because they cut you off on the descent. But we turn a blind eye, because the actor has a snow-white vest when it comes to choosing his projects. The man with the biggest set of teeth in Hollywood is currently suffering his way through a terribly beautiful vacation in the third season of “The White Lotus” – a must-see, and not just for vacation phobics.

Doechii

Miss Bite

Having the victory speech in your pocket before an award ceremony, so that you don’t just stammer “Thanks… Mom?” on the podium in case you win, shows good preparation. Producing a complete song to be released immediately after the triumph and doing a victory lap around the competition? Next-level flex. Doechii can afford it. After winning the Grammy for Best Rap Album for “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, she dropped the track “Nosebleeds” and underlined who the new undisputed high priestess of the genre is.

Deja Foxx

Potus 2036

When rabid raccoons hiss at each other over the last fish head in the garbage can, it has more dignity than the current political system in the USA. But instead of burying her head in the sand out of despair, Deja Foxx wants to move mountains. In 2020, the then 19-year-old entered the national political arena as a member of Kamala Harris’ strategy team. Now the activist is fighting against restrictive abortion bans and is already making plans to conquer the office that her former boss was denied last fall.

Tunde Adebimpe

Lone Wolf

When Tunde Adebimpe starts howling in the song “Wolf Like Me”, the adrenaline rises like an airplane crash that is pulled up again at the last moment. In the noughties, his band TV on the Radio was the darling of the arts pages. But the group has been off the air for ten years. In the meantime, the multi-talented singer has actually been seen more often on TV – in film and TV roles, most recently for the “Star Wars” franchise. Now the singer is back with a solo album. And once again, his voice makes our heart pump like a hunted animal.

Also kills us as lone fighters.
Xaviera Simmons, Sub Pop Records.

Dan Toomey

Bench press

What is private equity? What is private equity? Why is private equity? Anyone who doesn’t just understand the station toilet when it comes to financial and economic issues can take lessons from Dan Toomey. On the YouTube channel Good Work, the comedian in the “pre-schooler dresses up as a reporter” trench coat explains the business orgies of the rich and powerful to us dum-dums. He also lets the daughter of a hedge fund manager explain what her dad actually does all day. We’re not any smarter afterwards. But good entertainment guaranteed.

Business journalism for a laugh? He makes it possible.

Katy O’Brian

Power Act

A few years ago, action star and ham graveyard Steven Seagal got himself a toy sheriff’s star and pretended to keep order on a reality show. At the same time, Katy O’Brian was actually a police officer and took part in bodybuilding tournaments on the side. We don’t need to explain who the real badass is here. The actress’s Hollywood career has also passed Seagal by. After her cinema debut “Love Lies Bleeding”, major projects such as the conclusion of the “Mission Impossible” series now await her.

Satoshi Kuwata

East meets Vest

There are endless possibilities in a square of paper. For us, these are almost always short-haul airplanes, but masters of origami coax sophisticated shapes out of the sheet. For Japanese designer Satoshi Kuwata, this art is the starting point for his fabric creations. The LVMH prizewinner combines the minimalist elegance of his homeland with European couture. His Setchu brand celebrated its catwalk debut at this year’s Pitti Uomo. And contrary to our paper airplanes, this collection is an absolute high-flyer.

Bella Freud

Substance analysis

At her great-grandfather’s house, people would lie down on the couch for the soul striptease. Celebrities like Nick Cave, on the other hand, take a seat behind the podcast microphone to talk to Bella Freud. “Fashion Neurosis” is the name of the format in which the psychoanalyst OG’s successor and her guests philosophize about the connections between fashion and the psyche. As a fashion designer who learned her trade with Vivienne Westwood and has already dressed Kate Moss and Zadie Smith, the Englishwoman is guaranteed not to lose the thread during the conversations.

Zeb Powell

Cold frontrunner

Winter sports are as white as the snow on which they take place? This cliché melts away under Zeb Powell’s snowboard. As the first black athlete to win the gold medal at the X Games, the American is setting an example for more diversity in top winter sports. It is not only his daring and innovative skiing style that makes him a star, but also his charismatic appearances and social commitment off the piste. Things are going downhill fast with Zeb Powell – and that is precisely why he is flying high.

Coco Gauff

Prom Queen

Imagine standing opposite your idol – but instead of stuttering and asking for an autograph, you wipe it off the court. That’s what the then 15-year-old Coco Gauff did when she beat Venus Williams in her Wimbledon debut. Five years later, the American is well on her way to becoming a tennis legend herself. But almost sweeter than a Grand Slam title for the Marvel fanatic, who also has her tennis court outfits inspired by superheroes, is the fact that she recently made it onto the cover of an Iron Man comic.

Myriam Boulos

War & Love

Her camera finds the butterflies among the rubble and ashes. Myriam Boulos’ home country of Lebanon has been in a state of emergency for six years. Protests and revolution, repeatedly erased by violence and destruction. In this fog of uncertainty, the young photographer’s flash illuminates the everyday lives of her fellow human beings. She finds unbroken pride between fires and ruins. But also the tenderness of queer love. As part of the Joop Swart Masterclass, Myriam has now arrived in the queen class of photojournalism.

Gyuhan Lee

Radiant man

Bad design is not an option for us. Unless the bags are from Gyuhan Lee. The South Korean creates high-quality lampshades and room dividers from old McDonald’s take-away packaging. The result is not only stylish home accessories, but also pop-like works of art that illuminate the tension between Far Eastern tradition and Western commerce. Gucci has already commissioned the young talent to furnish an event. And we wonder whether even our ketchup-smeared napkins would have gallery quality in his hands.

Many a light is shed on this creative mind.
