Who is Sabato De Sarno? Gucci documentary provides an answer

“I don’t want to shout things. I want people to find them.”

This quote comes from Sabato De Sarno and it explains why the Italian remained an undiscovered force in the fashion business for a long time. A valuable secret that Gucci shared with the world in May 2023 when the fashion house appointed him as its new Creative Director.

This marked the beginning of De Sarno’s planning for the 18 most important minutes of his life: the fashion show of his debut collection for the traditional brand. Under the title “Ancora”, the 42-year-old and his team further developed Gucci classics such as the Jackie Bag or the Horsebit Loafers and designed an ambitious catwalk through the heart of Milan. The documentary “Who Is Sabato De Sarno? A Gucci Story” by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost not only provides a fast-paced answer to the question posed by its title, but also packs triumph, setback and resurrection into its 20-minute running time. The man, of whom only two photos existed in public for a long time, is at the center of a sensual storm of images. But as much as Sabato De Sarno whirls through the instances for his Herculean task, he never forgets his closest family amidst the glamor and grandeur in the documentary’s most touching moments.

Gucci Ambassador and actor Paul Mescal narrates the film, which can now be seen on the streaming platform Mubi. From the 3. An enhanced version for Apple Vision Pro will also be available in the App Store from April. Thanks to the immersive extension, viewers are completely immersed in De Sarno’s vision for “Ancora”.
