The Hype Travel – November 2022

“Traveling with kids is tough. My best advice is: don’t do it.”

Tom Segura

Nice to know

Rip-off

Do you still need arguments for not traveling to the airport by car? A glance at the airport parking prices should be enough: In Doha, you pay 236 to leave your four-wheeler parked for a week. That’s more than London Stansted (223.-), Abu Dhabi (193.-), Barcelona El Prat, Berlin Tegel, Boston Logan and even Zurich, where you can expect to pay around 190.-. The whole thing is pretty steep. By the way, the cheapest way to get there is at Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul, where the same time will cost you just 16.

Past is Present

Trip to the top? Or back in time? “The Alps 1900” combines both and shows Alpine tourism over 100 years ago, when people stormed the summit in lederhosen instead of tech gear, explored the mountains on muleback and were considered pioneers in skiing. Taschen’s work brings together photographs, postcards, posters and travel brochures from the 19. and early 20th century, shows the Mont Blanc, St. Gotthard, Simplon and the Dolomites and celebrates the heyday of the Grand Hotels in Gstaad, Grindelwald and St. Moritz. A book like a journey through time. Sabine Arqué & Agnès Couzy, “The Alps 1900. A Portrait in Color”, Taschen, ca. 150.-

Places

Brutalist Bunker

You need to get out, somewhere where the sun shines, but pure nature is too much for you? Then the Hotel Terrestre in Mexico could be the right place for you, as you can hear the crickets chirping just by looking at the pictures. Surrounded by dense greenery, this brutalist dream could just as easily come from another world. This was roughly the inspiration for architect Alberto Kalach, who pondered how extraterrestrials would design an earthly hotel. The result is a bunker made of stone and concrete that creates so much airiness thanks to its open design that you could hole up here until spring knocks on the door at home. 14 villas are available, each with two terraces and a pool with shower. All of the material used for the Hotel Terrestre comes from within a radius of one kilometer or was even produced locally. Every ray of light is used – and there is plenty of it on the Mexican coast – so that the hotel can be operated exclusively with solar power. Overnight stay from 350,

Nice to have

Opulence

Welcome to the section: something for people who already have everything. Perhaps also for jet or yacht owners or travelers who don’t want to be seen wearing off-the-peg accessories even at 4,000 meters above sea level. The Gucci travel set in a bright print will end up in their hand luggage. With slippers, sleeping goggles and an inflatable neck pillow, it’s exactly what you need to make your stay above the clouds even more pleasant. But not so much the credit card statement. Gucci, travel set in G-print, approx. 950.-
