Fashion is like music: it touches, creates memories and celebrates the moment. No wonder, fashion and music are intertwined like the roots of a tree and grow together at least as synchronously. With their stage outfits, chart toppers shape the trends of tomorrow and thus what we put in our shopping basket at Zalando. Our favorite fashion platform celebrates these looks in its new campaign “Make Your Own Moment” and calls on people to create their very own fashion moments.
The Swiss DJ duo 2M live fashion at least as intimately as their music – one more reason to listen closely when Morgan Mesple and Maximilian Eid reveal their fashion favorites.
FACES: How did you two find each other, and how did you end up becoming the DJ duo 2M together?
Morgan Mesple & Maximilian Eid aka 2M: We met in Sydney and shared a passion for the dancefloor and music right from the start. Back in Switzerland, we decided to get serious with our own music. It’s a constant, never-ending battle to improve and develop as a DJ – and that’s what makes working as a musician so special.
F: You attach great importance to your outfits. How would you describe your style?
2M: Groovy, eclectic, casual, urban, minimalist, retro, crazy and also a little funky.
F: What role does fashion play in your work as musicians?
2M: When we make music, we pay attention to comfortable clothing and accentuate the outfit with a special piece. This could be a cool hat, a tank top, eye-catching trousers or a colorful pair of shoes.
F: How do you observe the symbiosis of fashion and music?
2M: In the creative scene, the boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred. The connection between fashion and music is becoming ever stronger. This is certainly also due to people like Virgil Abloh or Peggy Gou, who have shaped the movement.
F: You play at festivals during the day and in clubs at night. How do the outfits of your audience differ?
2M: During the day, people tend to wear colorful outfits that reflect their happiness and enjoyment of the moment. We notice that our audiences often dress in black at night, which suits the dark atmosphere of the underground clubs we play in. We believe in the connection between music, a person’s state of mind and their choice of clothing.
F: Zalando celebrates fashionable moments in its current campaign. What special moment would you like to tell us about?
2M: It is difficult to define what a fashion moment is exactly, as we believe that it is present everywhere and at all times in different forms. It’s like this: fashion is part of our musical journey.
F: What does fashion mean to you?
2M: Fashion is like music: a personal expression through inspiration and the present moment. Changes in fashion go hand in hand with changes in the music industry; you can see this in the 80s trends, for example, which are currently very present in both scenes.
F: Who do you look to for fashion inspiration?
Maximilian : Morgan has inspired and influenced me ever since we met. He has extremely good taste and a good eye and is particularly good at selecting and combining things. That’s his superpower!
Morgan: I grew up in a family that was involved in the creative industry. This fueled my passion for fashion and for combining different styles from a young age. At the moment, I’m particularly taken with androgynous looks that are characterized by people like Evan Mock or Dennis Rodman.
F: Which three trend pieces are you getting from Zalando now?
2M: New Balance sneakers or leather shoes, a white tank top and wide cargo pants or jeans. And if there’s one more thing you need, it’s a thick puffer jacket.
