There are things in life that polarize: Pineapple on pizza, books versus e-books and, of course, Adilettes. In recent years, these comfortable slippers have progressed from simple flip-flops to a real fashion statement. But are they really as great as their reputation, or are there also downsides to these supposed foot wonders? In this article, we take a closer look at Adilettes and present what we think are the best reasons for and against wearing these cult slippers.
FOR ADILETS
1. you know that moment when you throw your laptop in the corner on a party night, call the pizza courier and don’t have to see anyone else or do anything else? Your feet can slip in at this moment!
2. home office! Thanks to Zoom-Meeting, what’s under the tabletop remains totally irrelevant.
3. Do you wear pumps or polished low shoes to go to the laundry room? Or, much worse, Crocs?! Exactly.
4. shoe shopping becomes risk-free, foolproof and goes in a jiffy. For men, women and everything in between anyway.
5 Anything that has been around since 1972 – and therefore even longer than the two-branch birch poles – must be a solid product. Adidas founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler came up with the basic idea back in 1963.
AGAINST ADILETTOS
1. the misappropriation of the slippers created with their suction cup soles for the wet room as a style accessory.
2. the fact that people who have an influence on fashion culture (Justin Bieber, Rihanna) are doing this misappropriation, that Gucci is producing luxury slippers and Adidas is launching a white wedding edition, all this raises fears that it will degenerate into a trend. Is that what we want?
3. The material: 100 percent synthetic. I wonder in which ocean the rubber, which has been floating around for almost 50 years, is floating around?
4. keyword “Assilette”: the cliché of the camping troll with trucker moustache and mullet.
5. just the possibility of combining them with high-waisted tennis socks. The rap song “Claquettes Chaussettes” even stylizes this aesthetic felony into a ghetto look.
Conclusion
Adilettes may have their pros and cons, but one thing is certain: they are a real eye-catcher and bring a good dose of humor to the world of footwear. Love them or hate them, Adilettes are here to stay – and we look forward to their continued fashion escapades.
