Negroni or a beer? Then we know seven bars in Basel that are worth discovering. The city on the Rhine has a lot to offer when it comes to evening entertainment.
Consumption
Consum is just a few steps away from the Rhine. If you fancy “wine and dine”, only a little more modestly, you’re in good hands here: At Consum, you can choose between 100 types of wine and order salami and cheese to go with it. It is no secret that we are all suffering from the current situation and the resulting restrictions. The creative answer from Consum: “Speakeasy”. Inspired by the secret bars that existed in America during alcohol prohibition, two former hotel rooms have been converted. Now they shine in new splendor and with living room charm. It’s all completely legal, of course, but with the same thrill as back then, because you can only reach them via a secret route. Drinks are available in the rooms and special requests are fulfilled by the courteous staff. The perfect place to ring in the weekend with friends.

Plant 8
The former machine factory in the Gundelidinger quarter has been transformed into a trendy bar. Accordingly, Werk 8 also offers plenty of space and industrial charm for drinks in the evening. In addition to the classics, the creative bar staff conjure up interesting and unique drinks that you won’t find anywhere else. Be sure to order the herb fries with the homemade cocktails – they are heavenly and are served with the best dip in town.

L’atelier
The “L’atelier” lives up to its name with its interior design, as the tables are converted workbenches that we know from handicraft lessons. This fairly new bar is located right next to the busy Bankverein. Another highlight is the patio, which is located outside and also provides protection from the wind and weather. If you are so enchanted by your favorite cocktail, you can register yourself and your friends for a cocktail training course.

To the kiss
Zum Kuss” is located in the small “Elisabethenpärkli” right next to the train station. The first thing you notice is the huge, unusually round window that gives us our first glimpse. But this bar in the “Pärkli” preserves a dark history: Elisabethenpark was once a cemetery, and where a cozy bar stands today was once a cemetery in the 19th century. The “Totehüüsli”, a mortuary, was built in the 19th century. Over the years, it was then rebuilt, and with the last redesign of Elisabethenpark, the Totehüüsli was converted into a restaurant in 2011. Now you can enjoy a coffee with friends in the former cemetery during the day or meet up for drinks in the evening. The huge and high bottle rack is impressive, with a ladder being used from time to time. And with the pink-red light and soft background music, “Zum Kuss” almost invites you to kiss.

Hinz & Kunz
The “Hinz & Kunz” bar can be found in the old market hall right next to Basel’s SBB train station, alongside the countless food stalls and specialist stores. The cozy interior invites young and old. Whiskey, rum and gin connoisseurs are spoiled for choice, as Hinz & Kunz has the “largest range of spirits in north-western Switzerland”. The friendly staff with lots of experience and charm is just a bonus point.

Library
The cozy and lovingly furnished Bibliothek Bar is located in the middle of Basel, directly on Barfüsserplatz. But you don’t necessarily read here, unless you fish a book off the shelf or read from the wallpaper on the toilet. With pleasant music and reliable staff, the Bibliothek Bar is “the place to be” for anyone who likes it uncomplicated. Poké Bowls with fresh regional ingredients are now available in the library.

Limit value
A stroke of luck: after the fire in Rheingasse in summer 2019, Grenzwert reopened its doors in Ochsengasse in May. The new location is now even bigger and even has a small garden. With lots of wood and unusual wallpaper, the bar has a new look. To accompany the drinks, you can order tapas and antipasti for the small appetite or burgers for the big one. The regular live performances by bands and DJs provide the right ambience in the evening.
