The pocket watch from Hublot and the American artist Daniel Arsham answers the question “What time is it?” with “Future”. The Arsham Droplet has now been presented in London.
Golden times for fans of pocket watches: What granddad used to pull out of his vest is currently experiencing a fashionable renaissance. But the collaboration between luxury watch brand Hublot and US artist Daniel Arsham doesn’t care what’s in vogue today. But what will be on fire the day after tomorrow – a futuristic timepiece in the shape of a drop of water.
The Arsham Droplet was presented to the public for the first time at the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London. It immediately becomes clear that this design is too good to disappear in your pocket. The concept of the pocket watch was therefore rethought. The Arsham Droplet can also be worn as a pendant around the neck or becomes an eye-catcher in any interior with the matching table stand.
The accessory, limited to 99 pieces, marks the second collaboration between Hublot and Daniel Arsham, who was already commissioned by the Swiss watch manufacturer to create a giant sundial out of the snow near Zermatt in 2023. In his creative process, the New York-based artist regularly unhinges the concept of time from its gears: In a kind of futuristic archaeology, Arsham gives the objects of contemporary everyday technology and pop culture the appearance of decay and crystallization. Viewers thus see their own present in a distant future – only in the past. Sounds complicated? But it looks beautiful. Here are some examples on Daniel Arsham’s Instagram.
For the Arsham Droplet, the American used titanium, sapphire crystal and rubber. Hublot’s Meca 10 movement ticks away inside. Thanks to its exceptional power reserve, the pocket watch does not need to be wound for ten days at a time. The housing has a double sealing system with 17 O-ring seals. Rubber cushioning on the sides ensures that shocks are absorbed. This means that this technically highly refined jewel is also secured for the coming decades.
The Arsham Droplet doesn’t just serve a trend, it redefines it. This pocket watch arrives in the new millennium thanks to its individualized way of wearing – and already cuts a perfect figure for the coming millennium, both visually and technically.
