(Un)known waters

Why not, I thought when I tried the ginger and mustard dressing at the Mensa salad bar. Who wants to be boring and always use the same thing?
Headlong into the unknown, that’s where your dreams come true, I once heard somewhere.
Well… the ginger and mustard dressing was a mistake.
Nevertheless, I expanded my Tinder account to include men and women.
After all, I was into Shay Mitchell (as is anyone with a pulse), and I liked women.
It was interesting; I paid attention to different things with women than with men. Sitting on a horse with an open shirt was simply laughable. A woman who only eats pasta in her underwear had something.
Lisa, 32, wore glasses in her display picture that were a little too big for her.
We quickly struck up a conversation, we both thought we were wine connoisseurs – you could say the chemistry was right. I visited her that same evening. I found it difficult to choose a suitable outfit. Men are simple. A plunging neckline and my pimple on my chin would no longer be noticeable. But women… what did they like? I was one myself, and I knew when a woman had something special about her.
Only… was I one of them?
After countless tree-change-yourself appearances, my light gray H&M dress from the Basic line accompanied me to Lisa’s apartment. She had great taste, nothing I would have changed about these three rooms. We hugged each other and both laughed.
“This is also my first chica date, by the way,” she said, and I felt myself lighten up. There was something reassuring about the fact that no expectations were placed on me. An evening at eye level.
The wine was flowing, we watched old X Factor episodes, searched for Jonathan Frakes on Instagram and debated microblading. Lisa’s closet fell victim to my curiosity – the same size, what a coincidence!
“You can keep it! It looks better on you anyway,” she announced as her eyes wandered over my stomach, which I was covering up with her yellow-spotted Marlene trousers.
I said goodbye with a kiss. After all, this was a date.
To describe it in the words of Katy Perry: I kissed a girl and I liked it!
When I got home, I wiped the make-up off my face from the past few hours.
I realized that this was the first date that had expanded my circle of friends.
I decided to stop restricting my account.
Not because I was afraid of being boring. Because I wanted to.

Writing is her hobby: Sybille Statz from Cologne loves great romances just as much as she loves horror films, cats and 90s series. You can read more of her work in her two short novels “Matches for Real – Das Dating-Desaster” and “After Sunset – Korallenrot” and here.

What does our author Sybille Statz experience when dating? Here you can find the other episodes to read, marvel at and smile about.
