It used to be: coffee or tea? Today it’s more like: coffee or matcha? The green powder is everywhere, and everyone seems to be an expert. We’ve put together our top 10 matcha spots in Zurich for you.
“How many matchas can you consume in a day?”, Drake asks in his song “Prioritizing”. We put it to the test and taste-tested our way through Zurich’s most varied matcha hotspots. More than five matchas a day is definitely not recommended—good thing there were two of us. That’s how we made it to ten different matcha spots and experienced a full-on matcha high.
Douge
Do you ever feel bad when you take your dog to a café and they can’t taste your cake? At Dogue, you don’t just get the creamiest matcha—you also get cake for the human plus-one and the dog. Right by Letzipark, the founder duo offers a dog-friendly vibe and excellent matcha, plus coffee courses and community events at their space.

FACES: In three words: how would you describe your matcha?
Semra Dosev: Creamy, mild, and sweet.
F: What do you think of the sudden matcha hype?
SD: We’re fully behind the matcha hype—especially when it comes with genuine interest in quality and a healthier lifestyle. But to us, the hype only makes sense if the matcha itself is real and comes from a good source. Calling something “ceremonial” and then hiding it under five kinds of syrup, sugar, and toppings kind of misses the point. For us, good matcha doesn’t need to be masked. It should taste great on its own.
F: What kind of customer makes you think instantly: this person is a matcha lover?
SD: A fashionista with a dachshund.
F: What music or sounds can you expect at DOGUE?
SD: Niche House, The Weeknd, Sade, Drake—basically a little soundtrack of our favourites, depending on the time of day and the day of the week.

YAPPA coffee
A cliché that, sadly, often holds true: matcha comes with juicy price tags. For a freshly made matcha, you’d practically give up a kidney—except we only have two. YAPPA coffee is shaking up Zurich’s coffee scene with affordable prices: here, a matcha costs just 5.50. So if you did sell a kidney, you could treat yourself to around 18,000 matchas at YAPPA. Low price, but no weak points: YAPPA’s matcha lacks neither finesse nor flavour.

FACES: What makes your matcha special?
Timon Bolten: Over four months, we probably sampled half a kilo of matcha powder from different suppliers. We now offer the highest quality—Ceremonial Grade—directly from Uji, Japan. We’re proud to offer this level of quality for CHF 5.50 and make it accessible to everyone.
F: Combo deal: which snack pairs best with matcha?
TB: Triple chocolate cookie or banana bread—wow, they’re good!
F: Your matcha in 3 words?
TB: Affordable and perfect for yapping.

Bloom Society
Iced matcha latte—on time for Pilates. Sorry, Shirin, for tweaking your lyrics, but at Bloom Society you don’t have to worry about being late to training because of a matcha. Bloom Society sits right above the Atomix gym and gives you that missing energy via matcha and açaí bowls before your workout—or the long-awaited reward afterwards. If consuming over 10 matchas in a day were a sport, we’d definitely have won a medal. Another medal goes to Bloom Society and their A+ matcha.

FACES: What makes your matcha so special?
Adriana Pokus & Fernando Leonhardt: We use matcha of the highest quality and prepare it with the care and attention it deserves. Years ago, we came across the quote “Good friends don’t serve bad matcha”—and it stuck with us. We never wanted to be those bad friends to our customers. To us, matcha is more than just a drink. It’s a ritual. From water temperature to whisking technique, every detail matters, and we take the time to prepare each cup with care.
F: What kind of music or atmosphere can guests expect when they visit your shop?
AP&FL: We created Bloom as a place where people can truly bloom again. The atmosphere is warm, positive, and personal. We know many of our customers by name, know what they usually order, and genuinely enjoy nurturing those relationships. That sense of familiarity and community is a key part of Bloom. As for the music, it follows the mood of the day. Ultimately, we want Bloom to feel inspiring and welcoming—like a little time-out that recharges your day in a positive way.
F: What’s the nicest or most unforgettable feedback you’ve ever received from a customer?
AP&FL: The feedback that means the most is when customers tell us Bloom has become part of their daily ritual. Some come with their family, others stop by before or after work, and many tell us Bloom is a place where they simply feel comfortable and at home. We’re also always happy to hear from guests who used to think they didn’t like matcha, açaí, or certain other ingredients, but discovered a new taste for them after trying Bloom. For us, there’s no bigger compliment than knowing Bloom has become a small but meaningful part of our customers’ everyday lives.

Nube
Almost as risky as standing under a tree during a thunderstorm: drinking matcha while wearing a white T-shirt. Nube eliminates that worry and serves its matcha in leak-proof special containers. The packaging looks like a transparent aluminium can. It’s sealed the same way too—only it’s made of PET and is recyclable. And the contents don’t disappoint either. The fruit purées are made from real fruit, and the autumn specials alone are reason enough to try something new.

FACES: What kind of customer makes you notice right away that this person is a matcha lover?
Giordano Paderi: Definitely the clean-girl-aesthetic girls. Most of the time, we already know what they’ll order the moment they walk in.
F: Is there a special ingredient or topping that gives your matcha a special twist?
GP: Our secret ingredients are definitely our fruit purées. We source them from different producers and retailers all over the world and specifically look for varieties that harmonise perfectly with our matcha.
F: What’s the nicest feedback you’ve ever received from a customer?
GP: The best is when customers tell us they had a bad day and came to us specifically to do something nice for themselves with a matcha and lift their mood. Knowing such a small moment can make someone’s day a little brighter means a lot to us.

O’Hara Flowers & Coffee
Cute date idea: go out for matcha and watch giant bouquets being put together. O’Hara started out focused solely on flowers, then later added a matcha and coffee bar to the studio. Fitting the setting, we tried a matcha with rose syrup—and can confirm it tasted at least as good as the talented florist we got to watch.

FACES: What do you think of the sudden matcha hype? Have you noticed changes over the years?
Mariia Shumakher: Matcha has definitely become much more popular in recent years. At the same time, we feel there will always be coffee lovers who stay loyal to coffee—just as there are people who truly prefer matcha and choose it almost exclusively. What we notice most is a seasonal shift. In autumn and winter, people tend to go for coffee, while matcha is especially popular in summer. It’s perfect for refreshing iced drinks and has become a real summer favourite for many.
F: What kind of music or sounds can guests expect in your café?
MS: The music we play varies depending on the weather, time of day, and overall mood. In the morning, our baristas usually choose something upbeat, like deep house or house. As the day goes on and into the evening, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed—with R&B and softer sounds that invite you to unwind and feel at ease. It’s always a little different, but the core idea stays the same: creating a warm, interesting, cosy atmosphere for everyone.
F: Is there a secret ingredient or topping that gives your matcha a special twist?
MS: We always recommend trying our “O’Hara Special Matcha”. It’s a rose-flavoured matcha with a creamy cap; we’re especially proud of it because it reflects our entire shop in a single drink. Flowers are a key part of what we do—we also create and sell arrangements and bouquets—so we wanted to let a little of that floral world flow into our matcha, too. The rose note is delicate and surprising, nothing like the typical taste of “rose tea”. It feels especially balanced—and it’s very us.

Mops
Right by the Kunsthaus, you’ll find the small café Mops. The location is perfect—because after a long museum visit, you need a moment to process all those impressions. And what better way than with a matcha in hand, in a calm atmosphere, letting all those artworks replay in your mind? Maybe the matcha is also the final kick before the creative flow—giving you the boost you need to paint a canvas yourself, fuelled by fresh inspiration.

FACES: Which snack pairs best with your matcha?
Sheila Lopardo: Our waffle croissants—sweet or savoury, depending on the mood. And of course the unbeatable pretzel croissant with seeds from Stadt Land Brot. Crispy, buttery, and a little salty—simply the perfect match for a creamy matcha.
F: What do you think about the sudden matcha hype? Have you seen changes over the years?
SL: We love that matcha is getting so much more attention now and people are becoming curious about it. At the same time, it’s important to stay aware of what’s behind the product. With the huge demand, matcha has become harder to source in some cases—especially high-quality matcha, where you really feel the scarcity. For us, matcha isn’t just the next trend drink, but a product that deserves a mindful approach. We also think matcha can absolutely remain a bit of a niche product. Not everything has to be available anytime, anywhere. Less, but truly great matcha—and a more conscious way of enjoying it.
F: Is there a special ingredient or topping that gives matcha a special twist?
SL: We actually have two favourites: our homemade strawberry-hibiscus purée for something fruity with a light tang—or our homemade vanilla-tonka-bean syrup when you want it warmer and rounder. We make both ourselves because we want full control over what ends up in the drink.

Miyuko
A flight from Zurich to Japan takes around 15 hours. We didn’t have that kind of time—but a 15-minute tram ride was doable. Right by Paradeplatz is Café Miyuko. It doesn’t get much more authentic: from the interior to the pastries—and especially the matcha—it’s just like in Japan. The vibe is warm and cosy, and after a tough morning of matcha withdrawal, it helped us shift down a gear.

FACES: What makes your matcha special?
Sara Hochuli: We’ve been ordering it directly from the tea farmer in Uji for 14 years. We know them personally and feel very connected to the product.
F: Which snack pairs best with your matcha?
SH: Cheesecake!
F: In three words: how would you describe your matcha
SH: Creamy, gentle, umami.
F: What’s the nicest feedback you’ve ever received from a customer?
SH: That our matcha latte is like in Japan.

The Matcha Club
Getting rejected by a club hurts. At The Matcha Club, that’s guaranteed not to happen—everyone’s welcome here. And there are no commitments either—although regular visits tend to become a habit all by themselves. Jokes aside: alongside its Zurich spots, The Matcha Club has recently opened a branch in Milan. And even if it’s technically a shop and not an actual club, it still feels like one: if you’re out and about with a Matcha Club cup, you’ll recognise your fellow Matcha Club Lovers.

FACES: What makes your matcha special?
Chiara Dalla Mora: Our matcha is created in collaboration with a historic producer in Uji whose story goes back over 450 years. Over time, it’s become a very personal relationship—we visit regularly in Japan, and he visits us in Switzerland. Together, we selected an organic matcha that’s reserved exclusively for The Matcha Club and served only in our stores. But for us, what’s special isn’t just that exclusivity—it’s the closeness to its origin, the knowledge behind it, and the people who have carried this craft forward for generations.
F: What do you think about the sudden matcha hype? Have you seen changes over the years?
CDM: When we opened Switzerland’s first matcha bar in 2022, matcha was still a niche. Today, matcha is everywhere—and of course a lot has changed. What we love: people know so much more. They ask about origin, harvest time, and preparation, and develop a finer sense for quality. For matcha, that attention is a good thing. Our standards are still the same as on day one.
F: What’s the nicest feedback you’ve ever received from a customer?
CDM: “Because of you, I love matcha.” You don’t really need much more than that. But also when people from all over the world come back every time they travel to Zurich or Milan. Some faces have been with us for years. Becoming someone’s fixed point in a city is probably one of the nicest compliments.

Bakery Bakery
Isn’t it a relief when “regular milk” actually means plant-based milk? At Bakery Bakery, that’s the norm—because they’re a fully vegan bakery. Just sit down and relax, without having to ask three times whether there’s really no butter in it. Why they don’t call themselves Matchary Matchary, we don’t know either—because the matcha is the cherry on top (with vegan whipped cream, of course).

FACES: Which snack pairs best with your matcha?
Lycra Stattmann: If you like it sweet: definitely our cruffin with Lotus cream filling! For everyone who prefers it classic, our pretzel croissant is the perfect match.
F: What kind of customer makes you notice right away that this person is a matcha lover?
LS: Honestly? All the cuties!
F: What music or sounds do you get in your shop?
LS: A colourful mix of real life: kids laughing, first-date chats, business calls… and in the background, maybe a laid-back track by Polo & Pan or Carla Morrison. Everything comes together here—from parents with kids eating gipfeli, to weekend brunch dates, to people working focused on their laptops.

Ju Matcha
At Ju-Matcha, matcha isn’t just the alternative for people who don’t like coffee—it’s the Main Character. For authentic, intense matcha, Ju in Niederdorf—or as a pop-up in Globus—is the right choice. You can tell how intense it is by the way your lips turn green. We may not be Elphaba from “Wicked”, but after this matcha we felt like we could defy gravity.

FACES: What makes your matcha special?
My Doova: We use Japanese matcha from different tea cultures—meaning tea cultivars that we personally love. Each one brings its own flavour profile. With every drink, we focus on quality and a balanced interplay of aromas.
F: What do you think about the sudden matcha hype? Have you seen changes over the years?
MD: We love that a tea that has been valued in Japan for centuries is getting so much attention. We’re seeing that curiosity goes beyond the trend: more and more guests are interested in origin, quality, and the different flavour notes.
F: What music or sounds do you get in your shop?
MD: Music that has energy and still feels relaxed. And you’ll keep hearing the sound of whisking matcha with the bamboo whisk. That’s simply part of the experience with us.
