For fall/winter 2026/27, Issey Miyake returns to one of the house’s fundamental questions: how can clothing shape the body without restricting it? Under the title “Creating, Allowing”, the collection explores the tension between purposeful construction and the natural movement of the material.

Sculptural silhouettes set the tone. Columned dresses fall in long, almost uninterrupted lines. High collars frame the face, while coats wrap the body in striking geometric shapes. Some looks almost appear to be formed from a single piece of fabric before dissolving into movement as the models walk. Pleats, engineered knit structures and controlled draping show the precise construction behind the designs.
Within these strong shapes, the body becomes more visible than usual with Issey Miyake. Lacquered bustiers – made using traditional urushi techniques on layered washi paper – sit firmly on the upper body. Bandeau tops and figure-hugging knitwear define the waist before the silhouette underneath opens up into softer volumes. The result is a clear contrast: a controlled upper body that transitions into flowing skirts and wrapped layers, bringing back Miyake’s signature flexibility.

“Creating” and “Allowing” aptly describe the core of the Issey Miyake fall/winter 2026/27 collection. Structured shapes anchor the silhouette, while softer volumes bring back movement. Less reinvention and more a refinement of Miyake’s signature design language.
