FACES: How does the DS-1 Powermatic 80 score visually with you?
Jan Gudde: Certina has also managed to create an exciting and modern watch with the new DS-1 Powermatic 80. The watch scores points with me because of its shape and the beautiful curved dial, and I find the visible back an absolute highlight and I’m thrilled every time I can marvel at the inside of the watch.
F: What inner values convince you about the model?
JG: Since the new DS-1 Powermatic 80 watch has a Powermatic caliber with a power reserve of up to 80 hours and a Nivachron™ balance spring, I was immediately convinced! Of course, the watch is also water-resistant to a pressure of 10 bar, i.e. a depth of 100 meters, which is a valuable feature for me as a diver – well done!
F: The DS-1 Powermatic 80 is supplied with two wristbands. What are they, and when do you wear them?
JG: The DS-1 Powermatic 80 comes with a five-link stainless steel bracelet and a blue textile strap made of #tide ocean material®. I like to wear the blue textile strap made of #tide ocean material ® when I’m out and about in a sporty or casual way or, of course, when I’m wearing something blue to match my outfit, such as a dark blue blazer. I really like the five-link stainless steel bracelet, which I use for a nice occasion, it looks very elegant, but still has sporty features for me, which suits me perfectly.
F: What do you think about the fact that the watch straps are made of ocean plastic?
JG: Fantastic, really well done by Certina, of course I would prefer it if there was no ocean plastic at all, but that’s another story. Back to the topic, I find it really exemplary of Certina that they use this ocean plastic for their production and thus remain sustainable. Well done Certina, BRAVO!!!
F: How important is a company’s sustainable practices to you when you choose their product?
JG: The fact that I am a father has made this topic even more important to me and therefore also important when choosing a product. I think it affects all of us, and when companies like Certina set such a great example, it’s exactly the right way to go and hopefully enable another great, clean world for our next generation.
F: How do you make the world a little better yourself?
JG: Let me put it this way, I do the best I can with the place I have in the world. As a family, we support companies that produce sustainably. In everyday life, we make sure that we can keep our CO2 footprint as small as possible. We also pay attention to what we buy when we go shopping and avoid plastic there too. Plastic is generally something we avoid as much as possible.
F: The Certina watch model is particularly durable and resistant. What does this watch accompany you on, and how do you test its durability?
JG : My lifestyle is very lively, which means I’m out and about from early in the morning until late at night, so I always want to have my watch with me so that I arrive at my appointments on time. I go to the gym in the morning and do sports, so the watch is already put to the test in my daily routine. The new DS-1 Powermatic 80 has already scored points here, with the double safety glass nothing can happen during an intensive training session. Otherwise, I need a reliable watch that guides me through everyday life with precision.
F: What do you look for when buying your watch?
JG: When buying a watch, it must first and foremost suit me visually, then we come to the topic from above, the watch brand should produce sustainably, it is also important to me that the bracelets are changeable, that you can change them at all and then also quickly and easily, as is the case with the DS-1 Powermatic 80. Ultimately, of course, the watch must be reliable and hard-wearing.
F: What do you associate with the Certina watch brand?
JG : I associate the Certina watch brand with Swiss precision at the highest level and, of course, with corresponding reliability. For me, Certina and its models are timeless and stylish and thus preserve their lineage. The company’s symbol of the turtle signals its sustainability, which never fails to impress me.
DS-1 Powermatic 80 from Certina
The new DS-1 Powermatic 80 from Certina makes a clear statement: with its textile strap made from #tide ocean material® based on plastic fished from the sea, the new watch model stands for sustainability and at the same time draws attention to the problematic situation in our oceans. In collaboration with scientists from the OST University of Applied Sciences in Eastern Switzerland, Certina has developed a method for processing plastic waste in a mechanical upcycling process and using it to produce its textile bracelets. Incidentally, the strap can be replaced with a stainless steel Milanese bracelet in one easy step – perfect for giving the DS-1 Powermatic 80 a sophisticated look. The stainless steel case and the domed dial with faceted indices emphasize the timeless design that will inspire us for many years to come. The front of the model impresses with its purism, while the back offers a very special treat: the visible back, which will make every watch fan rejoice.
