The kitchen oven is reliable, but it’s made us lazy.

Ansgar Freyberg sets the beat as drummer for The BossHoss, wears cowboy boots and a ribbed undershirt, brews craft beer and has more skin covered by tattoos than free. And: Freyberg lives vegan. His wife does the same, as do his three children. In his book “Vegan Rock You!”, the Berliner reveals how to get the kids away from fish sticks and how vegan food works without lots of processed tofu schnitzel from the supermarket shelf. It reads authentically, honestly and without the constant finger-wagging. The family reveals 70 dishes in this book, which brings animal-free cuisine closer to those who still think veganism is just for Birkenstock-wearing do-gooders. Regine & Ansgar Freyberg, “Vegan Rock You!”, Südwest, approx. 37.

For a coffee in Zurich, you can throw six francs on the table. That’s a lot and a shock for anyone who doesn’t call the city on the Limmat their home. If a view of the lake is not enough to help you recover from the price trauma, the Zurich native soothes you with a glass of Tirggel schnapps. Tirggel is a Zurich cookie made from bee honey, ginger and cinnamon – the same ingredients end up in a jar together with other spices, where the right liqueur is created over several weeks. The result tastes so special that you forget all about Zurich’s prices. Arroganto, “Tirggel Schnapps”, 24 % alcohol, 50 cl, approx. 54.-

Nutella is awesome. Unfortunately, it is also full of palm oil. Things are better thanks to the Hamburg-based brand HaselHerz, which relies on certified organic ingredients and a reduced list of ingredients. The evil oil, refined sugar or animal additives? Northerners don’t put anything like that in their glasses. Just four ingredients come together in the new Crunchy Choco Nut Spread: hazelnuts, coconut blossom sugar, cocoa, sunflower oil – that’s it! It’s just as good on bread as in muesli, and if you like it, just spoon it on. HaselHerz, “Crunchy Choco Nut vegan”, limited edition, 220 g, approx. 6(haselherz.de)

The guests have gone, the mountain of dirty dishes is still there. Damn. And still no dishwasher – so I guess we’ll have to do it ourselves. At least we get support in the form of the cute sponges from Hay, designed by Zurich-based creative Connie Hüsser. Made of polyester, manufactured in Turkey and with so much positive energy that Leo (that’s the name of the cute helper) will bring a smile to the face of even the most stubborn dishwasher. Hay, “Leo”, in various colors, approx. 21.-
