John Yuyi – Why not
John Yuyi initially sold likes, hashtags and barcodes as stick-on tattoos, but the internet business wasn’t working – so she tried her hand at digital art on social media. The Taiwanese artist now lives in New York, has her studio there and is currently exhibiting in Zurich, for example. She didn’t actually want to do quite that professionally, but if she’s already made it onto the Forbes “30 under 30” list, why not?
Fatih Tutak – The Dish
Manti – Turkish dumplings with yoghurt sauce – were on Fatih Tutak’s plate when his mother was still cooking for him. The good woman would never have guessed that her boy would revolutionize Istanbul’s restaurant scene. The top chef from his home town was missing for over a decade, holed up in the kitchens of the best the world currently has to offer – but now, he’s back. And also serves something other than his mother’s pimped dumplings.
Matko Arambašić – Fašhion Maker
BAGRA (“Saupack” in German), as the sustainable brand is called, has since been produced by a textile manufacturer near Zagreb, while Arambašić in Zurich is working on marketing the small but fine collections. Shirts, hoodies, socks – buy them and support the “Saupack” from the Balkans!
Stella Bossi – Techno mother
No one parties like her – and no one dances as hard to Stella Bossi’s beats as she does. Berlin gave birth to the child of the techno scene, social media has made her what she is today: a wildly acclaimed DJ and techno label mom – funny, cheeky and provocative, while she raves through the world with cat-eye glasses and lives up to the name of her label: “The Beat Must Fuck!”
Genesis Butler – Vegan Kid
Carnivores listen up! At the age of ten, animal rights activist Genesis Butler explained in a TED Talk why she had sworn off chicken nuggets at the age of six. And believe me: you’ll feel so guilty. Today, the chick is 15, her mouth has doubled in size and her will to make the world a better place is at least as strong.
Gio Pistone – Molto Graffiti
From Rome to Lugano and all over the boot, colorful monsters pop up on house facades, which Gio Pistone paints there because it is the only way she can cope with the monstrous figures that plague her subconscious at night. What began as the dream diary of a five-year-old turned the Roman into one of Italy’s best-known female street artists. This is how nightmares come true!
Cooper Raiff – Uber star
Type in Google: How to become an acclaimed movie director? Now watch out: First you quit your studies and look for a lucrative job, at Uber for example, where you can deliver food. You borrow money from your family, like 15,000 dollars, and use it to make your movie. You play the leading role yourself because no one else wants to, but if you do it right, your films will one day be as celebrated as Cooper Raiff’s.
Mickey Pierre-Louis – Paparazzi Pro
How cool, how exciting: live music and portrait photographer Mickey Pierre-Louis shoots photos at music festivals and knows rappers like Rick Ross and French Montana not only from the stage, but also personally. Rihanna just caught her at Rolling Loud in Portugal. However. If you haven’t been to a festival this summer, you can take comfort in her photos. It’s almost as if you were there yourself – but only almost.
Kelvyn Colt – New Kanye
Believe in the creative minds around you who put their heart and soul into realizing their passions, and support these people, or at least don’t belittle them – otherwise you’ll end up like those people who took a jibe at Kelvyn Colt and are now bragging that they went to school in Wiesbaden with the future of hip hop, as German Vogue calls it.
Yoo Ji-Tae – Award Swiffer
What Álvaro Morte is to “House of Money”, Yoo Ji-tae is to the Korean remake: the leading role of the professor. He could just as easily have done without them, as the South Korean prefers to create his own film projects that are at least as original. The guy has had lots of awards lying around at home for a long time, 18 to be precise, most of them for acting masterpieces – others for modeling umpteen years ago. He could dust off one or two again.
Kate Bush – Hip again
Who would have thought that Kate Bush would storm the charts again at 63, because teenagers who had never heard of the artist are now celebrating her 80s hit as a background track in TikTok videos. Since “Running Up That Hill” experienced a revival in season four of “Stranger Things”, the song has been played more often than ever online, while Kate Bush is probably cashing in more than ever before. Good for them!
B-Girl Carito – Breakdance Culture
Buenos Aires Battles – when the girls sweep the B-boys off the dance floor with their moves, it’s time for the boys to go home and keep practicing. B-Girl Carito has made a name for herself in Europe with her dance crew and has fought her way to the top of the best breakdancers in the world, at least among the top eight. It’s not as if she’s fed up with traveling now – but the next championship should take place in South America. Let’s see who can do better.
