The Faces: our heroes and heroines of the month

faces Heroes & Heroines

We’re putting these people on the hero podium this month: Cailee Spaeny, Sufjan Stevens, Mark Laita, Harris Dickinson, Jessica Hawkins, Stephen Findeisen, Tate McRae, Julie Pelipas, Jimmy Butler and Dolly Parton.

Cailee Spaeny – The King’s Queen

The king is dead. Long live the queen! It remains to be seen whether Cailee Spaeny will be crowned with the Oscar. At the Venice Biennale, she was at least awarded the sceptre for best actress. The 25-year-old masters her role in the film “Priscilla” with elegance and vulnerability. While Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” was the fever dream of an over-sugared storyteller, director Sofia Coppola stages the turbulent love story from Priscilla Presley’s point of view with sensitivity – and a leading actress who moved even the original to tears.

Follow Cailee Spaeny on Instagram here, and watch the trailer for the new Priscilla flick here.

Sufjan Stevens – Trost Fund

His music has always been aloe vera for our burning heartache. But now it is Sufjan Stevens himself who is experiencing tragedy: since September, he has been undergoing treatment for the rare immune disorder Guillain-Barré syndrome and has had to relearn how to walk. A short time later, the singer/songwriter accompanied the release of his album “Javelin” with a dedication to his life partner Evans Richardson, who passed away in spring. And yet – or precisely because of this – the new songs unfold such a loving power, as if they could alleviate all the suffering in the world.

Listen to what Sufjan Stevens sounds like here.

Mark Laita – Picture imperfect

At some point, Mark Laita felt like he was making light adjustments on the sinking Titanic. So the sought-after advertising photographer stopped taking pictures of iPhones and luxury cars and set up a studio in the Skid Row slum. There he receives crack addicts, street prostitutes and gang members. However, the camera does not crave misery, but gives dignity. And as an empathetic interviewer, the 63-year-old chronicles the stories of people who no one else listens to for his YouTube channel “Soft White Underbelly”.

Harris Dickinson – Beau Voyage

A model that suffers a shipwreck. A wrestler whose family is dying off. A club promoter from Ibiza who suddenly has to look after his estranged daughter. Harris Dickinson plays men you want to envy at first and pity at second. The Englishman gazes forlornly into a world that lies at his feet. Films such as “Triangle of Sadness” and “Scrapper” made the former Hollister pullover folder a favorite of critics and our contender for Hollywood’s “Leading Sad Boi” scherpe.

You can see what’s going on at Harris Dickinson on Instagram here.

Jessica Hawkins – Formula Femme

Let’s make sporting history: since the Formula 1 Grand Prix was founded, only five women have made it onto the world’s fastest racetracks. Jessica Hawkins is in pole position to remedy this situation. The Englishwoman is an F1 test driver for Aston Martin. Former world champion Nico Rosberg recently went crazy when he looked at his colleague’s race times. We hope the former stuntwoman for James Bond’s “No Time to Die” wastes no time and leaves her competitors shaken and stirred.

Here you can experience Jessica Hawkins behind the scenes of her Aston Martin test drive.

Stephen Findeisen aka Coffeezilla – Cybersheriff

The world wants to put you over its knee. But not in the sexy way. Canaries chirp in vain in the Shitcoin mines. And by the way, NFT stands for “useless color blobs, morons”. It seems as if the entire Internet has become a single trunk from which “Rolex” watches with rubber straps are sold. Coffeezilla hunts down the pharaohs of the pyramid systems. In his investigative videos, the YouTuber unravels scams for an audience of millions and takes on Sam Bankman-Fried and Logan Paul himself.

Tate McRae – Toe-to-toe feeling

Is Tate McRae “greedy”? That’s the title of her latest pop singer. And apparently it wasn’t enough for the 20-year-old to continue collecting trophies as one of Canada’s best dancers and performing on stage in the background for Justin Bieber or Demi Lovato. Instead, she bravely stepped in front of the microphone – and is now suddenly the hottest newcomer from the land of freshly polished ice fields. Thanks to the backing of her bestie Olivia Rodrigo, we can’t see too much danger of slipping on the further ascent.

Julie Pelipas – Palingenial

For highest reincarnation, she does not need nirvana, but a sewing machine. Even as a child, Julie Pelipas transformed her grandfather’s suits into her own fashions. Later, the androgynous oversize look became her trademark as fashion director of Ukrainian Vogue. The entrepreneur now lives in London and has founded the BETTTER platform, which is based on her first passion and upcycles unsold branded suits into expressive women’s clothing. The Karl Lagerfeld Prize was awarded for this. And lots of good karma from us.

Follow Julie Pelipas on Instagram here, and check out what’s going on at BETTTER here.

Jimmy Butler – Hair sharp

Jimmy Butler has always driven his colleagues completely crazy with his looks off the pitch. But now the Miami Heat basketball player has stepped it up a notch and looks like Fall Out Boy are in his top friends on MySpace with a new emo parting. The six-time NBA All-Star is musically drawn to a completely different stable: Country…? Country! The debut album is currently in the works. We wish nothing but slam dunks on anyone who surprises us with such wild moves both on the court and in life.

Dolly Parton – Mother America

USA, we need to talk. This democracy thing is obviously causing you problems. So let’s agree: it’s high time to introduce the monarchy. Because you have long since agreed on a regent: For over half a century, Dolly Parton has been winning hearts from all camps and generations. The country icon, entrepreneur and philanthropist is the blonde gold standard for excellence. No wonder, the, er, rock stars are queuing up for her new album “Rockstar”: Paul McCartney, Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks and others make music with her.

You have to experience Dolly Parton, for example here.
