2. DISTANCE, HOPE AND BUNNIES | Ben Apache | Vienna, Austria | Two mysterious figures go in different directions. One is protected by a plague mask, the other seeks help against the virus in nature.
3. WASH YOUR HANDS | Deadbeat Hero | Vienna, Austria | Another one of Deadbeat's crazy robots, who reminds us like mad (or mockingly?) to wash our hands.
4. CHEERS | Gnasher Royston | Great Britain | A wonderfully ironic image in which the bottle of delicious Corona beer is depicted like a vial containing the virus. The typography of "Cheers" is reminiscent of the sitcom from American television.
5. NO PANIC | Henrique 'EDMX' Montanari | Sao Paula, Brazil | Oversized, ironic and funny. If the children and even their teddies are wearing gas masks, you can be worried.
6. IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S ME. | iHeart Vancouver Canada | A typically witty, ironic image from iHeart, reminiscent of Garbo. The child seems to accept the imposed isolation calmly, unimpressed and positively.
7. JE SEME ATOUT VENT | Laureth Sulfate | Lyon, France | A clever take on the logo of the classic Larousse dictionaries. Laureth's elegant yet gloomy figure sows coronavirus instead of wisdom.
8. EVERYDAY HEROES | Sid | Canton of Vaud, Switzerland | A mural for frontline medical staff. Sid's models look at us intensely, intelligently and, for all their concern, extremely positively.
9. BLACK PLAGUE | Suhaib al Attar | Amman, Jordan | A magnificent depiction of a 17th century plague doctor. Century, with steampunk beak mask and Victorian hat. The surroundings make it all the more remarkable.
10. ALL THE TACOS | Wrdsmth | Hollywood, Los Angeles, USA | Wrdsmth's feelings always make us smile. Like us, he desperately wants it to be over at last.
The shittier the situation, the greater the scope for something new. This applies to both nature and humans, and the latter react with creativity to the forced break that the virus gives them. Street artists step out of the shadows and spray their thoughts on the wall: plague doctors, royal slogans, satire in its most colorful form. In “Street Art in Times of Corona”, Xavier Taples brings together the 50 best graffiti that make us smile even in a situation where there is not much left to laugh about.
It’s a strange time: empty streets, 2-meter distance, no hugs, no kisses, no togetherness. While many feel powerless, the pandemic is acting as a catalyst for street artists: they are spraying their thoughts on the walls. In “Street Art in times of Corona. 50 Statements by Graffiti Artists” contains the 50 most impressive works by well-known artists and new faces who express themselves in pictures and slogans.
