Good reasons for and against the record

Good reasons for and against the record

For:

1. Double-click? How soulless in comparison to putting on black gold, the sinking of the tone arm, the crackling and popping… Consciously listening to music in the era of sensory overload is a balm for permanently strained senses.

2. Neither shuffle mode nor repeat button.

3. Dead? Immortal! Vinyl is currently the only physical sound carrier format with rising sales figures…

4. Sound pirates on a treasure hunt: If you rummage through second-hand stores or flea market crates, you’ll come across some real gems, affordable for a tip.

5. Iconic artwork on 992.25 square centimeters – The Warhol banana has had a more lasting influence on pop culture than the associated songs by Velvet Underground. Will a thumbnail ever manage that?

Against:

1. After 20 minutes there is silence. To change this or skip a track, you have to stand up.

2. Nostalgics rave about the organic sound. But in purely technical terms, CDs and MP3s (depending on the transfer rate) cover the wider frequency range.

3. It’s a bit like smoked salmon: a luxury food with a limited shelf life. Heat, dust, abrasion…  The record is a hypersensitive diva.

4. A hard disk fits in your jacket pocket. Anyone hoarding the vinyl equivalent of a few gigabytes will have to rent a gym – and will get witch shots à gogo when stowing them away.

5. Thanks to the download code, we download new LPs to your cell phone. And Ronnie Wood allegedly owns a vintage car with a built-in turntable. Otherwise, however, listening to vinyl is terribly static.
