Max Mara Fall/Winter 2026/27: Soft armor

Max Mara Fall/Winter 2026/27: Soft armor

For the Max Mara fall/winter 2026/27 collection, Creative Director Ian Griffiths continues his exploration of strong female figures from history – this time with reference to Matilde di Canossa. In 11th century Italy, she ruled over vast territories and played a decisive role in European politics. In 1077, she was instrumental in the historic reconciliation between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII – a turning point in the power struggle between the crown and the church.

Max Mara Fall/Winter 2026/27 Collection

The reference to Matilde di Canossa is not a romanticized medieval fantasy. It is about leadership, control and strategic authority – qualities that are translated directly into the cut and construction of the collection. Authority becomes a design language.

The silhouette leads the way. A hip-hugging, flared cashmere maxi skirt moves with weight and a clear stance, grounded rather than decorative. A precisely cut suede mini tunic meets ultra-flat, thigh-high boots reminiscent of armor – rethought for the present. Outerwear remains the axis of power: oversized camel coats fall in architectural lines, the shoulders structured but disciplined, never theatrical. A nubuck shoulder patch brings functional sobriety without disturbing the clarity of the cut.

Cashmere, double-face wool, suede and soft alpaca create depth through material quality. A leather dress with a zipper appears resolute. A black column dress under a short leather jacket stands for restraint rather than spectacle. The color palette – camel, espresso, oxblood, wolf grey and deep black – appeals to our primal instincts, but appears controlled. Strength is shown in composure. Power is tailored, not proclaimed.

Details

The details make the historical level subtly tangible. Leather belts, fastened tightly over knitwear and dresses, evoke protection and structure while remaining clearly modern. A striking leather bag sits at the waist and is functional rather than decorative. Even the ultra-flat boots with discreet studs refer to armor – not as a costume, but as a reminder, translated into material.

With fall/winter 2026/27, Max Mara translates power into precision – a collection that leads quietly and confidently.
