One of Zurich’s greatest restaurants is not in the city, but in the middle of the forest. Degenried serves Swiss cuisine in a rustic atmosphere. We were there and loved it.
Past the magic castle in the middle of the Zurich forest, my new favorite restaurant, the Degenried, stands in a small clearing. A cozy and warm hut with a wooden floor, small stove, antlers on the ceiling and red and white tables. I recommend the warm tomme with sweet bacon strips (CHF 14.50) as a starter, if you like cheese and because every main course requires an introduction. For me, it’s the venison schnitzel with venison cream sauce (CHF 32.50), served by one of the guys in a lumberjack shirt with red cabbage, glazed chestnuts, spaetzli and a cranberry apple. But the offer is wide and includes much more than game: Zürigschnätzlets are served alongside veal cordon bleu, veal cordon bleu and beef fillet, chicken skewers, fondue and minced meat with croissants. The patriotism – if you can take anything positive from the word, then it’s culinary – continues right through to dessert: the Tobleronemousse (CHF 12.50). And for those who are afraid of the dark at night and don’t want to make the long journey – because of the wolves or a Little Red Riding Hood who might jump in front of the car: every Sunday, the Waldzmorge (CHF 39.-) is served.
