The Coppolas are jacks-of-all-trades, not only churning out great films but also one Hollywood star after another (Sofia Coppola, Jason Schwartzman) and are the family with the most Oscars and nominations in history. That might be enough, but not for patron Francis Ford Coppola. He entered the hotel business in 1993 and opened the Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize, a virtually self-sufficient eco-lodge with eco-electricity and home-grown produce – almost 80% of the products come from the hotel’s own vegetable and herb gardens, fruit and nut plantations. In the 21 years that followed, Coppola opened three more resorts in South America and most recently, in 2012, the charmingly luxurious Palazzo Margherita in Bernalda in southern Italy, where one of the suites was decorated in the same style in honor of Francis Ford’s Tunisian grandmother(www.coppolaresorts.com/palazzomargherita). But only in the original Blancaneaux Lodge do the ceiling fans come from the “Apocalypse Now” film set and blow a Brazilian breeze into the room like the rotor blades of a helicopter. This is probably the closest you’ll ever get to movie history. Overnight stay from approx. 140 francs per night. www.coppolaresorts.com/blancaneaux
