Most of the water in the universe exists in frozen form, that’s a fact. We love ice not only in cocktails, but in winter especially in its most romantic version: as a skating rink! And they are available in unique settings or even with illuminated ice cream. All that’s missing now is the flight ticket and the perfect companion. If that’s too much trouble for you, you can concentrate on the most beautiful skating rinks in Switzerland and start skating straight away.
With its 18,000 square meters, the ice rink in Russia is one of the largest in the country. The ice is not left in its normal state, but illuminated from the inside with 33,000 LED lights. A total of 4,500 skaters can take to the ice at the same time. The fun, together with skate hire, costs approx. 20 francs.
Zollverein coking plant, Essen
Thousands of visitors skate across the ice here every year. The ice rink is located in the middle of the UNESO World Heritage Zollverein and extends over 1,800 square meters. The travel guide Marco Polo awarded the field the title “probably the most fascinating place for ice skating in Germany”. We are thrilled and voted the location our favorite! With an entrance fee of 8 francs, you too can take part.
It is the most internationally renowned ice rink, which is transformed into a skating rink from November to March. The public ice rink can be used by 500 people at the same time and covers an area of 3,000 square meters. This attraction costs 6 francs.
Rideau Canal Skateway, Ottawa and Kingston
Every winter, the historic Rideau Canal in Canada is transformed into the largest ice field in the world. Only when the 7.8 kilometers reach an ice cover of at least twelve centimeters are we allowed to skate our circles. But circling the canal between the capital Ottawa and Kingston doesn’t get you anywhere…
Robson Square Ice Skating Rink, Vancouver
Ice skating in the heart of Vancouver is free and runs from December to January. In 2010, a total of 2 million dollars was invested in the underground ice rink during the Winter Olympics. The maintenance work took almost a decade.
The classic ice rink is also on our list and, with an entrance fee of 32 francs in high season, is also one of the most expensive ice rinks on our list. The motto here is: first come, first served, because 150 people have to share the space on the ice rink.
Not only is the ice cream an attraction here, but also the club nights with internationally renowned acts. In addition to this event, Somerset House has other great offers to keep visitors happy. We like!
The façade of the town hall shines in beautiful colors and the 8,000 square meter ice rink is almost impossible to stop marveling at. Here, the spectacle doesn’t just take place on the forecourt. What you can’t see in the picture is the romantically illuminated ice path through the middle of the Rathauspark.
Winter Wonderland ice rink, London
London is building an entire “Winter Wonderland” in Hyde Park, so of course an ice rink is a must. The ticket costs approx. 20 francs, live music is included. Here you feel like you’re in a fairy tale!
Eiffel Tower, Paris
This ice rink is not on the Eiffel Tower, but on top of it!
Gloves must be worn on the 190 square meter ice rink on the second floor and you are not allowed to bring your own skates. Despite everything, this romantic location is not to be dismissed.
The most beautiful ice rinks in Switzerland
Live on Ice, National Museum / Live on Ice, Küsnacht Romantik Seehotel Sonne /Live on Ice, Lucerne
One idea, two cities. In Lucerne and Zurich, numerous ice skaters skate under the motto “Live on Ice”. The ice rinks are decorated with Christmas decorations and provide unforgettable curves on the ice.
From 2. until 31. December, the snow bunnies gather in Zurich on Gustav-Gull-Platz.
Dolder artificial ice rink, Zurich
This classic was built in 1930 and is one of the largest artificial ice rinks in Europe at 6,000 square meters. Not only are tracks made in the ice here, the Dolder sports facility also offers an igloo fondue tent in addition to the construction of snow sculptures!
The largest natural ice rink in Europe is located in Davos Klosters and measures 18,000 square meters. Our personal highlight: the public evening ice skating, which takes place every Friday evening during the season from 7.30 to 10 pm.
Top of Europe Ice Magic, Interlaken
The “Top of Europe Ice Magic” starts on 17. December is already in its third season and is open until 25. February open. Here, the individual ice fields are connected by winding ice paths. The site also has a Christmas market.
