Woodkid has a golden touch for profound, world-class indie sounds: his debut “The Golden Age” is likely to appear on pretty much every best-of 2013 list of renowned critics. And his concerts easily justify the advance praise.
His job was to stay in the background: As a director, Moby or Katy Perry were among Yoann Lemoine’s clients. And even in interviews, the 30-year-old often comes across as an intimidated schoolboy who is somehow embarrassed by all the attention. However, the man behind the pseudonym Woodkid stirs his music with a big (wooden) ladle: Strings, horns, timpani, pianos – under his cap, the Frenchman concocts epic melancholic pop with colossal arrangements and an indie attitude. The track “Iron” was the first to go around the (social media) world in 2012 – including an overwhelming video clip. This spring, the long-awaited album finally followed, accompanied by a tour of often sold-out venues. Tickets for the gig at Zurich’s Kaufleuten in April also sold out faster than Homer Simpson could say “Doh!”. So it’s a good thing that Lemoine and his band are coming back to Zurich on November 21. And even better, FACES is giving away 2×2 tickets!
