When it comes to hair, Rolf Baettig knows exactly how it works. After all, the hairdresser regularly travels around the world as a trend scout. Baettig then brings the latest colors and hottest cuts to his customers’ heads in his own St. Gallen salon. And is therefore just the right person to tell us about the summer trends.
FACES: What are the hair trends of the summer?
Rolf Baettig: The cult shag haircut is experiencing a revival for women, while the undercut is in great demand for men. In summer, the easy wet look is a big topic – I call it the Lady Di Revival wet look.
F: What are the trends in color, cut and styling?
Rolf Baettig: A cool blonde and dark hair are no longer mutually exclusive and make blonde particularly rocking. The trend is towards expressive contrasts: dark, almost black roots and red tips, for example. When it comes to the cut, perfection in shape and detail is important, and when it comes to styling, everything revolves around the easy wet look: from smooth, shiny lightness to the Kim Basinger or Wilde Curly look.
F: How is the wet look achieved? Can you explain to us step-by-step how to proceed with styling?
Rolf Baettig: For short hair, we recommend “WET DOMINATION Exteme Splash” from L’Oréal Professionnel and for long hair, care with “Elixir Ultime Crème Fine”, “Gloss Appeal” from Kérastase and “WET DOMINATION Shower Shine”.
F: Braided hairstyles are also a big trend. Which braids are in demand this season?
Rolf Baettig: The Sissi plait.
F: Is there a braided hairstyle for beginners?
Rolf Baettig: Yes, the triple plait. Normally, a picked-up triple plait is braided using the top-over technique. It is much easier to weave the passées through the bottom. Take a strand alternately from the left and right and pass it through the bottom of the triple plait, in the middle in each case. You can then comb the individual passées together and pull the resulting plait apart with your hands as desired. The result looks as if the plait has been placed on top of the adjacent hair.
F: The pony is back. What should I bear in mind when cutting fringes, what works and what doesn’t?
Rolf Baettig: Ponies have to be heavy, even if they are jagged. It is very good if they are ultra-short. Absolutely on trend are all kinds of base lines from round to asymmetrical to straight, while tiered fringes are out.
F: Sun and sea salt damage our hair. Which hair care should be in every suitcase?
Rolf Baettig: “ Sun and sea salt attack the hair structure, dry it out and lighten it. Salt water residues are difficult to remove. It is therefore advisable to use a shampoo that takes these circumstances into account, such as “Bain Après-Soleil” by Kérastase or “Solar Sublime” by L’Oréal Professionnel, followed by a care mask (“Masque UV-Défense Active” by Kérastase or “Absolut Repair Lipidium Mask” by L’Oréal Professionnel). And be sure to use a product with a UV filter while sunbathing (“série expert Solar Spray” from L’Oréal Professionnel or “CC Crème Soleil” from Kérastase).
