It’s not just teenage girls who get weak at the knees at the sight of Lucky Blue Smith: those blue eyes, that blonde hair, and then there’s that daring James Dean smile. But the boy is only 17! And is already conquering the fashion industry. Zalando has snapped up Smith for its “Share your Style” campaign. Cool thing! Because that gave us the opportunity to chat with Smith about skinny jeans and the perfect selfie.
FACES: What three lessons do you take away from your work in the fashion industry?
Lucky Blue Smith: First of all, treat the people you work with with respect. Then, always be on time. There is nothing worse than being late. And thirdly: Be yourself.
Q: What would you change about the fashion industry if you could?
LBS: I don’t think I wanted to change anything at all. It is just the way it is.
Q: You’re in front of the camera a lot. What are you thinking about?
LBS: Of course I think about the clothes I’m wearing and what exactly the customer wants from me. But to be honest, I often think about food too. (laughs)
Q: How do I take the perfect selfie?
LBS: The right light and the ideal angle are important. But whether there is a perfect photo… I don’t know.
Q: You always look good in photos.
LBS: Oh really? Thank you!
Q: What has been the best moment in your career so far?
LBS: When I was able to fly to Iceland and work there with Annie Leibovitz. That was really amazing.
Q: Who is your style icon?
LBS: James Dean and David Beckham.
Q: What is your favorite outfit?
LBS: My black skinny jeans.
Q: What does every man need in his closet?
LBS: Black skinny jeans. (laughs)
Q: What are your absolute style no-goes?
LBS: I don’t like shorts, I think they’re really bad. Or those huge collars on vintage shirts… yuck! And I don’t like overly flashy looks, bright colors or glittery stuff.
Q: You also share your styles on Instagram. Is this app more of a curse or a blessing for you?
LBS: Clearly a blessing.
Q: Why?
LBS: Instagram spreads so much good. It’s fun and I enjoy sharing my pictures and important moments. And you can network with numerous people from all over the world. I think that’s really cool!
Q: What is a good day for you?
LBS: Sleeping in late, then getting up and meeting up with my friends. We then hang out together, go to the beach and eat something tasty. This is a really good day for me.
Q: What would you like to be perfect at?
LBS: When skateboarding or surfing. I like both sports incredibly much and would find it hard to choose between the two.
Q: What are your weaknesses?
LBS: I can’t concentrate very well and often lose focus. To be honest, I have so many weaknesses that I can’t even name them all. It’s best to ask my friends, they can tell you exactly where I went wrong. (laughs)
Q: What was the last thing you bought?
LBS: If I remember correctly, it was a Snickers.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever read about them?
LBS: That my sister and I are twins – which we are not. And when we tried to explain ourselves and nobody believed us, I started to tell everyone the story myself.
Q: Your mother also modeled herself. What did she teach you?
LBS: She told me that I should always try to stay myself and have the right people around me. People who care about me and my well-being.
Q: What was it like growing up with so many siblings?
LBS: It was great growing up with three sisters and my mother in the house. Four women. My sisters are all older than me. They give me advice and tell me what to do when I don’t know what to do.
Q: If you had to choose between music and fashion: What would you choose?
LBS: The music, but I would still try to model alongside it.
Q: What do you miss most about your home in Utah?
LBS: Nothing at all. Except for my friends. But nothing else.
Q: Could you imagine filming a show like “Keeping up with the Kardashians” with your family?
LBS: Of course, why not. But in a completely different way. The focus should not be so much on our lives, but more on our music.
