The early bird gets the fattest worms – and the best photos in Sintra without tourists posing in Birkenstock sandals. It’s just 30 minutes from Lisbon to the city of 30,000 inhabitants, whose most picturesque squares are just as crowded as Lisbon’s best bakery. It’s better to give Sintra some time than a day trip. Because once the buses, cars and crowds of tourists have gone, Sintra shows a completely different side. Almost vulnerable, quiet and incredibly beautiful thanks to numerous palaces and pastel-colored house facades. Once the summer residence of the Portuguese royals, today the small town has its arms around anyone who appreciates cobblestones, wine and good food.

The spacious, green grounds are home to numerous rooms, a pool and the best view of the city you could wish for. The boutique hotel impresses with its modern interior in a prime location and the Casa da Estefanea Boutique GuestHouse with its atmosphere, as the rooms are set in traditional Portuguese walls. Restaurants in Sintra
Romaria de Baco is one of the best places to eat calamari in Sintra. It’s worth ironing your shirt and polishing your shoes for dinner at the Incomum. Instead, confit duck carpaccio or steamed octopus ends up on the plate. Tascantiga has the best croquettes and codfish sandwiches. Fancy a candlelit dinner? Then off to Tacho Real, where every love is rekindled at the candlelit tables. The Bar do Fundo serves good food, especially in the morning, when avocado toast, pancakes and the view of the beach are the best way to start the day.

Shopping in Sintra
Ceramics, raffia bags, leather shoes: the list of things waiting for new owners in Sintra is long. At the weekend, the Almoçageme market complements our wishes with spices, jams and delicious food to go. At the São Pedro market you can find even more goodies that look great on the shelf at home. The old town is teeming with small boutiques and cute stores: Almorabida, Casa Branca and Violeta are good addresses. A Esquina and Casa Alegria sell works by local artists – from 3D prints to oil paintings. There are numerous antique stores near the station, Henrique Teixeira is one of the best.

Party in Sintra
Sintra may not be the ultimate party center in Portugal, but it still knows how to make the bear tap dance. This doesn’t happen in big clubs, but quite naturally on the street when the weather is good and the mood is even better. On Fridays, Estado de Sitio is transformed into a karaoke bar with a dance floor.

Must Do
At 540 meters above sea level, the High Cross above the Palácio Nacional de Pena is the highest point in the Sintra Mountains. Take a stroll up and enjoy a view of the Tagus estuary and Cascais as far as Lisbon. Speaking of views: if you have the time, drive to Cabo da Roca, whose 140-metre-high headland juts out into the Atlantic.
