Alice Diop x Miu Miu: Art Basel Paris

by Alicia Buchs

No models on the runway, just an announcement: For the Art Basel Paris art fair, Miu Miu has commissioned French film director Alice Diop to curate an entire exhibition. Her goal is to show how the image of Black women has been misrepresented for centuries—and how art can help set that right.

Instead of a fashion show, Miuccia Prada is handing over the vast hall of the Palais d’Léna in Paris to award-winning filmmaker Alice Diop. Under the title “Geste de Consolation,” Diop did not shoot a new film, but instead transformed the building into a walk-through experience consisting of four rooms from October 21 to 25. Visitors who walk through the installation are immersed in the inner worlds of Black female artists. Pain and suffering become palpable and prompt reflection.

Time for Art

The exhibition is like a journey through several stages: It begins with historical archival footage and photographs. Next, the “Chambre à soi” opens up—a spacious living area with an inviting library whose literature has long inspired Alice Diop. On a central stage, performers recite works by influential figures such as Audre Lorde and Zadie Smith. The proceedings are underscored by expressive hip-hop dance and rousing jazz music. The finale features a massive, nearly five-meter-tall bronze sculpture of the guardian spirit Mami Wata by Simone Leigh. The female figure is entwined by a snake and represents the West African water spirit. The result is an artistic experience that deeply moves visitors and leaves a lasting impression.

In the mood for art? Maybe the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art book is just the thing for you.
