THE HYPE: Watches & Jewelry News & Trends

We want a meter-high table clock, fill our wish list with all kinds of sparkly things and get nostalgic at the sight of a clock face: here are our current favorites from the world of jewelry and watches.

Darling

ICE QUEEN

In winter, ice cube consumption drops dramatically. No more iced lattes, instead hot pumpkin spice lattes flow in torrents. We only make an exception for ice cubes of a very special kind: the Ice Cube collection from Chopard. The diamonds are the only thing that make us freeze. But the many golden accents and brand ambassador Bella Hadid with her stunning charisma quickly warm us up again.

CREATIVE SPIRIT

A question you should never ask yourself if you don’t want to lose the joy in life: Do you really need this? Ruins your mood in 99.9 percent of all cases. It’s much better to ask: Does this make you happy? “La Quête du Temps” by Vacheron Constantin, a table clock over one meter high that took seven years to develop, is something that, from a purely rational point of view, nobody really needs. That’s why we want this masterpiece all the more, because not only is it a masterpiece of watchmaking, it also celebrates craftsmanship and ingenuity – values that we cannot afford to lose. The openable work of art, with integrated astronomer, consists of 6293 mechanical components, 23 horological complications and three levels: the dome, the astronomical clock and the base. Seven patent applications in the field of watchmaking and eight patent applications in the field of automata have resulted from this haute horlogerie extravaganza.

RETRO JOURNEY

Although clocks show the time, they do not yet allow us to travel back in time. Although, some researchers are certainly working on that, aren’t they? The “Calatrava Pilot Travel Time” from Patek Philippe almost makes it possible. Its dial, inspired by old pilot’s watches, makes us so nostalgic that we almost think we’ve landed in a different era.

I WISH…

You can work on your own wish list 365 days a year. But writing a list is even more fun when there’s an occasion, which is why we pull out our pens, especially towards the end of the year. Right at the top this year: everything from Graff’s new high jewelry collection, aptly named “I Wish”. Between rare diamonds and deep green emeralds, we can’t decide which piece tops our wish list.

EVOLUTION

Time – which is not so easy to define, if you ask astrophysicists – guarantees one thing above all: it passes. And it brings change with it. This is not only evident from the fact that many of the great watchmaking houses are already very old. Audemars Piguet, for example, has just celebrated its 150th birthday. You can also see that their timepieces evolve over the years. The “Royal Oak” has already undergone a real evolution. Adjusting the shape a little here, using brand new technology there. “The Jumbo” is probably far from the final form. But for now, it’s brand new and we’re blown away.
