What would we take with us to a desert island? A whole house, sauna and gym included. Whistling Wind Island is located on the coast of Pointe au Baril in Ontario, Canada. A modern retreat was built on a peninsula of primary rock, where you can enjoy the wild weather conditions with the best views.
If a weekend home, then in an adventurous environment where you have to get on a boat to reach your destination. That must have been the thinking of the architects behind the Whistling Wind Island project. On a peninsula on the coast of Georgian Bay in Ontario, rocks from the Precambrian – the age in which the earth was formed – rise up. Navigating by boat between the rock formations is like a slalom. But this is exactly where the main house, a so-called bunkie – a guest house -, a sauna and a fitness room are located. Everything you need to live. The two main apartments were built on the original floor plans of existing structures. Triple-glazed walls ensure natural heat regulation – sustainability and comfort were at the top of the priority list. All-round terraces offer a non-stop panoramic view. But don’t forget to keep an eye on the time while you’re relaxing. From November, the water freezes and the remote residence becomes uninhabitable until the next season.
